Johann grew up in the Cape Town area. After university (U.N.I.S.A.),

in need of a job, he accidentally began working freelance in the production side of Cape Town’s burgeoning commercials production industry. After South Africa’s first democratic elections in ’94, Cape Town became a very popular destination with international fashion and commercial producers, and Johann was fortunate to gain employment and work experience through this turn of events. 

 

After some years in the film industry, he realized he loved making films, and wanted to pursue the creative aspects of filmmaking and make his own films, so he packed his little suitcase and moved to Hollywood, as good a place as any to learn the craft, he figured. In 2001, he enrolled in the L.A.C.C. Film Program, followed by the U.C.L.A. Extension Film Program, completing the Film Production and then Film Directing Certificate Programs. Through these courses he gained balanced view not only of the various crafts such as cinematography, editing and directing, but also gained a knowledge of the history and theory of cinema. 

 

After college in the U.S. he worked in Los Angeles, initially as the assistant to Academy Award nominated documentary filmmaker Suzanne Bauman, and then freelance, on various commercials, documentaries and TV shows, before returning to Cape Town to pursue his own projects, which have included short films, music videos and TV spots. Terabyte Films has been conceived as a vehicle for his documentary film ambitions, on which he now concentrates. Like Fellini said: ’Nothing is more fantastic than reality.’…  

 

During his tenure in the motion picture business, Johann has worked as a writer, producer, director, editor, assistant director, director’s assistant, production assistant, driver, and in the catering, art and camera departments! 

 

Other than making films, Johann dabbles in making music for film, loves photography and enjoys writing. He is married to the artist Cara Bauermeister and lives in the quiet town of Somerset West, outside of Cape Town.
